E36 M3 Issues?

Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting a 1995 e36 M3 its got 119,000kms on it and looks very solid inside and out, I crawled around it tonight, everything looked good.

My question is there anything in particular I should be looking at, for the e36 specifically.

I covered all the main areas for both the e30 M3 and the e34 M5, but is there anything specific for the e36 version.

Do you have a link? If it's close to me I can drop by and check it out for you. But if your serious about it then get it inspected. E36 M3's come in to versions.... ratbagged and banged up..... or taken care of and clean.... very few inbetween in my experience.

I'm an ex e36 guy (95 325)... Where would you like me to start? The usual issues that crop up on the E30 and E34 are also present here... For an exhaustive list, go to the E36 board on Roadfly and do a search for the E36 guide for beginners... Highlights below...

1. Cooling system. The entire thing - waterpump, radiator and thermostat housing has a shelf life of 150K km. Similar to the E34 in many respects...

2. Suspension. Like all BMWs of this vintage - most of the bushings are probably shot by now and the factory ball joints never lasted me more than 30K km. If the shocks are original - they're due soon too of course. Save a bit of money for this work as it's best done all at once in my experience..

3. Check the usual places for rust.

Except for the odd vanos issue, the M50 based drivetrains are pretty bulletproof. No valves to adjust, not much to go wrong if they're well taken care of. Check for any rattling from the front timing chain cover around the vanos unit... Transmissions rarely fail. Clutches last forever if not abused. The dual mass flywheels do fail but not often. Have the usual checks done on the integrity of the motor of course.

Where is this 95 M3 with such low mileage BTW? If you don't want it - I might go take a look

hey guys, yea its the silver one on c/l, I crawled over it a few days ago and didnt find anything. The water pump was just replaced as the seal was leaking. And it was hit on the front right fender, but everything was fixed Dot-R. It tracks straight and there are no pulls. The car is actually in Burnaby, and I'll probably look at it again on Thursday, but thanks guys for all the info.
