Im a first time bmw owner

Hi,
Im new to this forum as well as new to bmw ownership. My brother gifted me a 1988 325i after a bad car accident totalled my Riviera. I love my car, ALTHOUGH I recently put the car in reverse and have not been able to get it out of reverse. I thought it was the shift linkage (I was hopeful) but my mechanic told me its the tranny. Do I need a whole new one or can I buy parts and rebuild it or is a used one better? Does anyone happen to have one laying around that they dont want anymore? I love this website, you guys are a plethera of valuable information.
Thank you,
Kathryn

newbie here re: tranny

Thank you for the link to that ebay site, that guy has a ton of bmw stuff.
I found a used tranny from the guy who built my car, so I will be back on the road soon. Thanks for your help and for a great reference website for me!

Why not just get used to driving in reverse?
Seriously / Welcome to BimmerClassics.
I bought my may car 2 months ago (It needed work) - The group on this site have been extremley helpful. I have sorted out the stuff I needed to - Many thanks to them. And now I love my Bimmer. I am sure you will be happy with yours. It's totally worth a little work. The prize is an awesome driving expierience.
Best of luck.
Tim
