Hi Matt,

Good to have you with us and thats one heck of a nice project you have there!

The belhousing of the E36 M3 transmission will bolt up to your engine but the diameter of the belhousing is not your problem. It is the angle in which it bolts up to the engine. The M3 transmission, like most BMW transmissions, bolts up to the engine at a 30 degree angle while your M20 transmission bolts up at 20 degree angle. If you want to use the E36 M3 transmission then your stock M20 cross mount and linkage will not longer work.

Metric Mechanic makes a special cross mount and linkage that is designed to work with this setup in an M20. They sell their special cross mount and linkage as part of their M20 Transmission package which includes a S531 transmission (used) for $249.

These guys are all about BMW engine, transmission and drivetrain performance and they really know their stuff. You can give Metric Mechanic a call and ask for Jim. He is the owner of Metric Mechanic and is a super nice guy who will be only to glad to give you the details on doing the swap and what your best options are. Jim's number is (573) 765-1269. You can also visit their website at MetricMechanic.com.

Welcome to BCN and be sure keep us posted on how you make out.

Welcome Matt to the site and glad to have you with us! Nice project build you got underway. Have you decided yet what to do about the transmission?
