BMW Newbie just purchased my first BMW, a 1989 535

Hi everyone,

My name is David and I just purchased my first BMW. I got a good deal on an '89 535 which appears to be in great condition. I am a little nervous havign heard that these cars can be very expensive to fix but I have laways lusted after them since I was a kid and it was time for my truck to go to truck heaven.

I am going to take it in for a tune up immediately. I have heard that CG is good and also Vancouver West Motors on East 6th. I think I want to have a mechanic do the first tune up and then I will start doing them myself from there.

So....tips anyone. General maintenance? Anything I should listen for? The car has 247000kms on it but feels very tight. The clutch has 75,000 on it but fealt good and the engine appears very strong. One conern is that when I first started the car the idle was nto smooth. It had been parked for a while and steadied but it was a bit up and down. Could this be a fuel injection problem.

Pleased to be here

David

Greetings David, a tune up is a good start, you may also want to have a valve adjustment done at the same time if you don't know when the last one was done, then you 'll have a known starting point for any that will follow.

One major tip is, get yourself a Bentley Manual for your car,it will pay for itself in no time at all and is a great source for understanding how the various parts and pieces work together and where they are located and called.

Your idle troubles could be a number of different things, vacuum leaks in the various rubber bits under the hood,or a dirty ICV (idle control valve) are the ones I would look at first.
