What a beautiful car.

Who cares about rain! Cars are meant to be driven! As long as it's not being punished by a salt/gravel mix good for him for getting his car out there and enjoying it.

328? I know these were quite popular with racing back before the war.

There was a thread around here on the Munich BMW museum in which that car figured prominently.

Thanks Guys !

It looks like there were a few different body styles for this car ..... Here is what I found on it.

The French started town-to-town racing in the early 1900's, but the practice was soon outlawed by the French government. The Italians thought it was a good idea so they created races between their towns. These annual racing events were celebrated by the towns, like the Germans celebrate beer fests in towns all over Germany. The most famous Italian town race was the 1600 kilometer (993 mile) circuit from Brescia to Rome and back, which started on March 27, 1927.

The BMW 328 Mille Miglia roadster featured the 328's powerful overhead valve six-cylinder engine and a streamlined body made of an ultra-light aluminum/magnesium alloy. It won the event twice, in 1938 (with a class win) and outright in 1940. In the 1940 race, 328's dominated the race, finishing first, third, fifth and sixth.

In the 1940 event, Baron Fritz Huschke von Kanstein, in the special-bodied BMW 328 coupe, had a record setting victory with an average speed of 103.4 mph. The top speed he achieved over the course was 139 mph, a remarkable figure for the time. Such startling speeds for a car from this era were the result of BMW engineer Rudolf Schleicher's innovative design featuring a power-to-weight ratio of only 5 kg/hp.

I think there is a guy in W. Van who owns one. He also has a red 507. I saw him bring both cars into Park Shore once. Damn nice cars.

It's also interesting to see how similar this car looks to the Jaguar XK120 but this once came out 10 years before the Jag.

When men were men ! Open face helmet, goggles, bugs in the teeth.

The sound of these engines must have been incredible at speed. I wish I could take this car for a spin. Even it it was in the rain.

There is one in West Van, No way ! and he has a red 507. This guy has very good taste in cars.

I will camp out at Park Shore until he returns, just so I can see it

There is a modern version of the 328 MM....

They have this car in the BMW Museum, in Olympic Park, Munich.

Along with the driver outfits and other bits.

Mercedes-Benz has a better history though, If you ever go to Stuttgart you have to go.

The bottom room is filled with antique's, race cars, and concepts.

This was the modern section (1/4) of the room, on the other side they have race cars that date back to 1910

Hi Blackice, I think you will find that the car being driven in the rain is a
slightly modified 328 Mille Miglia Touring of 1940. Driven by von Hanstein and Baumer it won the event. Externally the car is certainly almost identical - the only obvious difference being that the headlights have been extended forward of the wings (fenders?). I hope you find this useful and of interest.
Regards, Brian
