| Senior Member | Removing shocks from strut tubes Hi all, I've got the strut tubes off the car (with shocks/springs/bearings) still attached. How do I safely remove the shock from the top of the bearing. I know the top of the shock has a square end to grab onto white the locknut is loosened but the nut is recessed? Any tips?

ryanferguson's pictures | hey Craig, are you talking about how to remove the shock from the macpherson assembley on your front end? if so its quite simple. all u need is a spring compressor and an impact gun to loosen the nut on the top of the shock, after the nut is removed the assembley will come apart and the shock will be accessible. |

| Senior Member | Hi, I was worried the shock would spin if I hit it with the impact. I have a spring compressor (used it for the rears) so compress first, the with the compressors on the springs hit the top nut with the impact?

Lithium's pictures | Craig You can just zap it hard and fast with the impact wrench. It will come flying apart. No Problem... Caveman can do it!!!! (I did) You only really need the spring compressor to get it back together. Have at er!!!!! ![]()

whataboykie's pictures | Funnily enough I was reading through a detailed rebuild procedure for this from a UK BMW magazine at lunchtime today. I will scan it and post it up here when I get home this afternoon. Maybe it will help you out? |

Blackice's pictures | That will do it ! I have also just used an impact with no spring compressor. Just don't stop ! Or you could strip the threads of the damper when the force of the spring has only one thread holding it from coming off. If the damper rotates, stop ! This can screw up some dampers.... You can use vise grips on to hold the damper's shaft. But make sure you use some rubber to protect the shaft of the damper from being marked up by the vise grips teeth. The hard part is getting the nut off the top of the strut towers. Soak with penetrating oil first. I put mine in a vise, and used a large pipe wrench. This will mess up the nut, but they are cheap to replace. There will most likely be oil in the strut. So be prepared to catach it when you pull the damper out of the strut. Good Luck ! |

| Senior Member | Hi, Thanks all for the info. I'm putting the bil sports and h&r into a friends car this weekend. So I wanted to make sure I didn't screw them up. Craig,
