Blackice's pictures | Custom carbon spitters - E30 {A sneak peek} Well the Dirte30 club had there weekly meeting on Saturday, and we spent the morning making a plan to build some carbon splitters for the bottom of the IS lip. ![]() ![]() The plan is to make a flat splitter, from 2 x 2 carbon twill. ![]() The basic template was cut from clear mylar, then black insignia was added to help see the shape against the white table. This is a rough idea of the shape and size.... ![]() More to follow ![]() |

Weeman83's pictures | How many layers do you think this is going to take? I used to lay up CF bits for my university project, and after 5 layers it was still flimsy as heck. Good start though. |

| Senior Member | suggestion... Have the splitter follow all the contours of the IS lip IE. the middle notch, recession what ever you want to call it. I'd be interested though.

Blackice's pictures | ![]() ![]() We looked at the photos, and yeah, sure why not. It looks great and could be easily done.... I just wanted to have a splitter that didn't look like it was off the shelf. I was thinking of this kinda of look. ![]() Yeah I agree ! Where you working with epoxy ? 5 layers with polyester resin should be fairly stiff, but if you want it to be very stiff, adding a core is the key. I was thinking of using a foam core to stiffen it up, as well to add some detail to the edge. Last edited by Blackice; 02-17-2009 at 10:24 PM.. | |

Blackice's pictures | Things are moving along nicely, with this project. On the weekend, I finished the cut template, looked at the materials list, and started to look at the basic size needed for the bagging. The next step will be to cut the template for the foam core, so we can cut the core material, finalize the nest, and we should be ready to do the lamination. I can get 4, maybe 5 splitters per set up. Once laminated, they will need to be cut to size, edges sanded, and the clear top coat applied ...... I hope to have the first one ready for the weekend. ![]() Dave |

I got a bit side tracked with the carbon...... First there was the clutch, even with the info about the single mass VS the dual mass, they still sent me the clutch kit for the 318is..... You know what I am talking about. Grrrr Then there was my dead fuel pump, which I stole from the my other car, So I still need to do my fuel pump..... GRRRR But I still have the carbon and the foam waiting for me, so I hope that I can get thing rolling very soon Dave |
