Differentials

OK, don't laugh, but here is maybe a dumb question: How can you tell what type of diff. is installed on your car, be it limited slip and or it's ratio?

Is it stamped on the diff. casing somewhere or do you have to pull it apart?

There should be a Metal tag on the bottom of it. On My 318is it has 410 stamped on it....For 4:10 open. If it has a S before the numbers to is a LSD.

If you can get under your car you should be able to see it. You might need a scottbright pad to clean it up.

in the case that the stamped plate is rusted and smudged:

1. secure front wheel to prevent rolling.
2. jack up both the back wheels.
3. put the car in any gear.
4. release e-brake
5. try rotating either rear wheel.

If the rear wheel rotate freely and the other rear wheel rotate in opposite direction, it's open diff.

If the rear wheel will not rotate. u get an LSD.
