Oil filter stuck!

Hi guys,

I need some advice. My oil filter is stuck on. I've tried just about everything to get it loose...

I've used a screwdriver and punctured it

I've used a filter cup wrench and broke it (it was metal!!)

used a belt-type wrench and that didn't work

and obiously used my hands..

HELP, please and thanks

Are you saying that you jammed a screwdriver right through it and still couldn't get enough leverage to budge it? Try a longer tool. Drill a bigger hole and use a length of steel rod.... You may end up just tearing the casing off but your options at this point are limited.

Some carefully applied heat may help too. Obviously have an extinguisher handy since you're torching close to flammable liquids..

When you reinstall - generously lube the seal and threads with oil.

I had a filter stuck many years ago - as a last resort I took a chisel and cracked it loose by getting a bite on the lip/rim and hammered it undone carefully. Once it had broken the seal it spun off like it's supposed to. Just be careful you are hammering in the right direction obviously. Good luck, Neil.

Thanks gents. The space where the filter resides is quite limited, but I will try to get a bigger bar in there.

Kirin said it well, Water Pump Pliers.

Anything large and plier like that can give you mechanical advantage.

Did you install it yourself in the first place? Did you lube the Oring?

A heat gun may help you make the rubber more compliant but heat and oil can be a bad combo.

If you want I can give you my Heat gun to try and fix it.

Cheers!

no no no no no! you should never have to resort to punching a hole in it with a screw driver.

if the strap style filter tool doesn't work, try the cup. then a slide lock filter wrench. if you use the metal strap style, the harder you pull the tighter it gets. i've crushed oil filters with that. (i worked at mr. lube). with all of these tools, theres a very very small chance of it being stuck on still. if it is, notch the base of it, and use a chisel or flathead and hammer it loose. rememeber, lefty loosy

With the use of teamwork, an array of tools, the triple bypass technique, coupled with a belt and plumbing wrench, TEAM Awesome bested the tightest oil filter in the history of man.

Ryan took the sick rolling shots BTW
