Whine from the rear end

G'day

M42 318is. Got a whine from the rear end, seemingly from the right wheel well. Suspected wheel bearing but it does not change pitch while turning. Suspected worn ring/pinion, but it does not change pitch with accceleration or throttle lift-off either. Definitely increases with road speed though.

What other items do i need to consider? Input pinion bearing? Output shaft bearings?

I do have worn rear brakes that i need to address, but I don't think the whine is relevant to that.

Cheerio!

On my previous E30, I had a whining rear end that didn't change pitch during turns either, but it nonetheless was the wheel bearing. For some reason the right rear bearing always goes first so it could very well be just that simple.

Im am experiencing the same noise in mine. I have the bearings but I want to find a place to do it for a reasonable price. Let me know what you find out.

good luck with that.... Its not a very hard job, just a pain in the ass if your inner race gets stuck on, which it most likely will. I just got my brother to lay a bead of weld on the inner race, and when the weld cooled it shrinks and pulled the inner race in on itself, then i just slid it out. Other then that its a fairly straight forward job.

It's too cold outside these days, and I would need a welder, which is on the back of my brothers tuck, which he uses 7 days a week, so unfortunately I can't help you out. though the beer and $ sound rather tempting...
