Cold start issues.

Hi All,

I've just replaced the fuel filter, Air filter (k&n) and 02 sensor (ouch) and it has cleaned up some running issues as well as given me an extra 50Km on each tank of gas but I still have a crazy cold start problem.

The car fires up right away but will die like it's being asphixiated a second or two later. Restarting results in the starter turning the engine over endlessly. Eventually I can get it started again but sometimes I give up.

I can get it started when it is cold when I give it a little gas and keep it at about 2-3K for a second or two then the idle is rock solid.

Occasionaly I have the same issue when the car is warm but much less frequently.

Craig,

Sorry, are you saying that you had the same problem and it was the fuel sending unit?

Craig,
yes, the sending unit was giving sparatic readings making my car sputter. I had to keep it at 1000 rpm or it would die when it was cold. If the car was warm and was idling for a few minutes say in stop an go traffic it stalled out and would not start, If I tried to start it it would just crank and crank. After about 2-3 minutes of just sitting their it would start again.

Another symptom I had was that when starting I would have to give it a little bit of gas to start. This happened every day.

When I told a guy on r3v that my gas empty light was on at half a tank he told me to test my sender and sure enough......it fixed the problem.

Since then I know 3 other guys who have had the same issue and it was the sending unit that was the problem.

Is this about what you were experiencing?

kowalski's pictures

could also be the check valve or the FPR. put a clamp on the return line and see what happens.

Same for me as above.

Same, except today (-5 outside) started ok.

"...When I told a guy on r3v that my gas empty light was on at half a tank he told me to test my sender and sure enough......it fixed the problem..."

Are there two senders? or one? Is it along side the fuel pump under the trab door in the passenger side back seat? How much was it?

It is thanks, as long as the part isn't too $$ and it's located where I think it is I'll try that out

I took it to a garage up here and they charged me $90 to replace the fuel filter and put some gassline antifreeze in, didn't even bother to try and fix it.
