Easily the 1954 type - it is the cleanest, and was used for all of the iconic BMWs that made the company a modern success today. (there were many very nice pre-war BMWs, but many other makes as well that have not lasted, and BMW owes its success to the post-war 'new class' and beyond)

Yup, BMW was originally an engine builder for airplanes for the most part I beleive. The blue and white center of the logo represents the spinning of a propeller blade at high rpm.

The true meaning of the ‘sky blue and white quartered’ BMW logo is the most controversial issue of the company. According to Dr. Florian Triebel, Executive Board Member of BMW AG, “There are two traditions concerning the significance of the BMW logo and trademark, offering two different interpretations of its sky blue and white fields. One interpretation points to a rotating propeller. The other relates the BMW logo to Bavaria as the place where the products are manufactured”.

The circular BMW logo was a representation of a spinning propeller of a Bavarian Luftwaffe. At the time, aircrafts were painted with regional colors and the colors of the Bavarian flag were white and blue. It is said that the pilot saw the propeller as alternating segments of white and blue, hence the logo. The roundel was a nod to Karl Rapp’s original company.

This may be so but in fact it is known that it also comes from the white and blue flag of Bavaria – the largest state of Germany. The capital city of the state is Munich and this is the place where even today we can find the BMW Headquarters.

I'm kinda a fan of the 1954. Something about it just captivates my attention.
