Weren't they an epic failure though? Not as how they were built, but by the sales? I'm not too sure...

I believe they sold every one they made, it was just a pretty limited production car. built on the e30 chassis with 325 m20 running gear, belt driven doors that slip under the car when "opened", and plastic body. I think it was sort of a oddity at the time for sure, but I would love one. I have seen one in the UK with s50b32 e36 m3 evo running gear. WICKED!!!

Nick's pictures

The Z1 was a test-bed car, to develop the 'z-axle' rear suspension, which was then put onto E36's.

A Z1 was used in a Jackie Chan movie, I forget which one...has a nice shot of the doors operating, pretty slick.

There were about 8,000 Z1's built. The lack of success is due to a combination of things - speculators buying them knowing they're a limited run (I've seen delivery-miles examples for sale on German sites for 50k Euros or more), and performance wasn't up to the standard people expected from a BMW after so many years of the E30.

It's a neat car though. All of the body panels can be removed and it can be driven with just the space frame (not sure how legal that would be, but it's safe). BMW envisioned owners buying multiple sets of body panels so the car could have the colour changed at will (they claimed it takes 40 min to swap all of the panels).

One with an s50 swap and upgraded suspension would be awesome, despite the loss of "originality."

They aren't too rare though. Check out the German car sale sites like Autoscout24 and Mobile.de and you'll see about 50 for sale at any one time, with prices ranging from less than 10k Euros to pushing six figures (though really only one of the 60 Alpina RLE versions of the car is potentially worth that kind of coin.)
