JoshCalkins's pictures | In a recent interview, Stephen Zoepf, the Accessory Development Manager for BMW Performance of North America, let slip an interesting tidbit. The BMW Performance brand releases upgrade components such as body kits, brake kits, cockpit accessories, and the like. While some of these components certainly do crease the performance of BMW vehicles, Mr. Zoepf was asked if there were any plans to offer more high-performance and racer-oriented modifications. He said no, BMW Performance would not be issuing any of those parts, but a new North American BMW Motorsport division would be. Zoepf continued to say that the parts would become available in the next few months through "a select dealer network" and that "enthusiasts will be able to order parts designed by BMW Motorsport for BMWs to be used in racing." The exact details were scarce, and it is not even clear whether or not Mr. Zoepf was authorized to make that announcement, as a check to BMW's press release database shows no mention of M division upgrade parts being sold to the public. There was also no mention as to whether or not there would be parts released to support older platform vehicles. Mr. Zoepf said: "We expect to support most BMWs currently available to racers with additional parts." This statement implies that older BMW's would be supported, as they are certainly still used in racing, but again, no confirmation about exact offerings. Now that the cat's out of the bag, hopefully BMW will put out a press release with some firm details. |
