JoshCalkins's pictures | In a press release today, BMW announced the creation of a new technology for their EfficientDynamics program: Magnetic Tow Technology, or MTT for short. The German automaker partnered with NASA to produce MTT in order to "retain its World Green Car of the Year crown." The way MTT works is that a small magnetic unit is placed in the front end of a BMW vehicle that emits a 20 meter-long magnetic beam. The driver finds somebody going in the same direction that they are and latches onto the vehicle with the beam. Once latched on, the driver can then turn off their engine and sit back and enjoy the ride as they are towed by the vehicle in front of them. Dr. Noitt All, the head of BMW Innovation, was quoted in the press release as saying, "we thought why burn your own fuel when you can burn someone else’s?” Dr. All then said that you can be kept up to date with all the latest developments by emailing his fellow BMW Innovator at uve.vollinvorit@bmw.co.uk. For those of you who think that this is a bit ridiculous, you're right on the money, because this is BMW's April Fool's Day joke. Give the company kudos, though, because they didn't just put out a press release, they paid to have a bunch of advertisements run in British newspapers promoting the "new technology." No word yet on how many people actually emailed in (read the email address out loud), but I'll bet there were more than a few. Initially, this seemed like a pretty good prank, but the real joke will be when BMW realizes they spent a bunch of money on fake ads during a time when the auto market is dropping drastically. |
