Post Project i Will Start With A Z2

BMW Z2
Earlier this month, preliminary details about BMW's Project i were released, and the initial indication was that this project would focus on compact vehicles more akin to smaller Japanese models than the traditional German automobile. Well, roadster enthusiasts rejoice, because news out of Germany from Auto Bild is that the standard-bearer of Project i won't be a Mini is BMW clothing, but will instead be a brand new Z2 roadster built off of the 1-Series platform.

A roadster on the 1-Series platform? Why would you need that, you ask? The 1-Series is already offered in both convertible and coupe variants, so why bother with a roadster, especially when a new Z4 just rolled off the lines? Well, what makes the Z2 special is the powertrain and its weight.

Target weight is a mere 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilos). There are three powertrain options: a 1.6-liter 204-horsepower four-cylinder engine; a hybrid with a petrol engine; and an all electric model. The Z2 is set to debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, and the only image available is an artist rendering from the German publication Auto Bild. While the addition of another roadster to the BMW line may seem to be an unnecessary move, it's still a lot more fun than an electric Mini.
