5 speed swap on my 87 635csi

hey all,

After i blew up my auto 4speed a few weeks ago ive missed all the bimmerclasics meets and i miss my car terribly. sooo for xmas i got all the bit and peices i need for doing a 5 speed swap from a 88 635csi, like pedal asembly, driveshaft, transmission, master/slave, sach clutch and so on. im gonna put a short shift kit in it and all new bushings.

interesting thing i found out after i had the pulled all the parts from the donor car is that the vin tag said 635csi/a whitch i think means that the donor car had already had a swap done on it LOL. so i have no idea what car the tranny originaly came from. the driveshaft looks stock so probalby from another 6 but i want to know what kind of tranny it is.

im pretty sure its not a 265 cause the bell housing is one peice, it says 260 on the casing, how do i know if its a 260/5 or a 260/6?

The VIN tags are universal, and work for both 5 speed, and auto cars. Hence, the 635CSI/A. The / means it can be either or. If it was a 635, post 85, then you've got a 260/6. Good job! Make sure you got the clutch fluid feed line, and hydraulic line as well. And if you're going to go through the hassle of swapping it, make sure you use a NEW clutch master! Thats a crappy job, and not what you want to do twice.

Correct. Sorry though, no spare parts at the moment unless you're interested in an original set of Metric basketweave wheels that you cannot buy tires for anymore... .

Though, truth be told that there are reissues available in Europe....for only 200 GBP, each (plus freight... ouch.)

The TRX GT, which is what you had, is available from Coker Tire, in the US. ONLY $408 EACH!!!! At least the GT is a good tire, unlike the earlier TRX's. The GT was based on an MXX3 Pilot.

Exactly. I'd sooner spend that kind of money swapping out the tranny...!

I've still got my 3-piece BBS metric wheels for that day. If the 6ers start heading to US muscle-car price territory I'll be shelling out for a set of those TRX GTs awfully fast.

For a bit more than the price of new rubber I got a set of Alpina open lugs with tires.

My old bottlecap metric wheels and tires are used for storing the cars (I could not care less if the TRXs get flat spots) or for stylish hose reels.

Friend of mine works for ZF. He had the guy who builds their cutaway transmission displays, work some magic on his E28 TRX's. He cut them all into quarters, powder coated them, prettied them all up, and then gave them out for Christmas as book ends, to all of his car friends! This was about a year before I met him, so no TRX book ends for me
