The story of a 6er

Hey Guys,

Wanted to post an update on my 77 630csi. Many of you have seen it, some have not. Those who have, have likely only seen it sitting in front of my shop, gathering mold. I've owned the car for nearly 3 years, and done nothing with it. Its a rust free(and I mean RUST FREE), 630csi from San Diego.

I purchased an 81 633csi from a fellow Bimmerclassics member, earlier this year. Ron's car was running, and driving, but rusted to bits. Its the black one that we cut the roof off of a couple months ago. Pulled the driveline out of it, along with engine harness, and whatever else I needed.

Now, my 77 was an automatic, with a 3.0L M30 on L Jet, with points ignition. My donor car was a 5 speed, with LH Jet, and electronic ignition. My car also had it's body harness mostly removed, laying in a pile on the floor! A "project in a box", at it's finest.

After realising I have no wiring diagram for an E12, I dug in anyway(foolishly). Encountered several wiring problems along the way, but one by one, got over all of them. Finally sorted the last one tonight(trying to get a signal wire to the injectors), and twisted the key.

She started! Fired it up, and then shut it down again. Removed all the tools from the car, covered the fuse box, installed a steering wheel, and took her around the parking lot.

No gauges, no seat(milk crate), no lights, and only dowpipes for an exhaust. Plus, I still need to bleed the brakes and clutch again, but thats all simple stuff. She's a car again, and I actually drove the damn thing, after 3 years!!!!

I'll spend an evening or 2 this week, sorting all the little issues, and maybe get it on the road by the end of the month. Just in time for winter storage

Anyway, just wanted to share my joy. I'll post some pics this week, once the interior(all new upholstery) goes back in.

Thanks Guys.

Adam and I are going in on Monday to do some more work on it. Dash is cracked, so I'm installing a crack free one, need to install window regulators, make all the lights work, hook up gauges, finish the EFI wiring, bleed the brakes again, and install the exhaust.

Fraser is coming in tomorrow to complete the new upholstery on it, as well. I'm stoked.

Luis, you'll get a ride for sure. Its not a rocket though, just a 3.2. It was JUST fast enough to beat up on Adam's 325is.

Yaaaaay! The Banana rides. She'll look amazing with the interior in and a polish.
Any chance you could flip her and finish up the 323?

Definitely not going to sell this baby. We've been scraping dirt off the undercarriage, which has exposed the cleanest, most free "old school" BMW I've ever seen. Trailing arms are still glossy black, output flanges on the diff are still shiny silver, etc. This one is a keeper, and would take some serious lootcakes to pry from my hands.

Burnouts? Hmmmmm, I do have a 265 gearbox in it, and there is a 3.25LSD side loader sitting on the floor right now. Plus, it DOES kinda need tires next spring.....soooooo......hell yes, there will be a burnout vid at some point.

She's ALIVE...!!

I'm dying to see this car all put back together and running again. It was starting to look/appear all neglected and sad outside there all by itself...nice to know she's receiving your dedicated attention Al...

I Was having a shitty day today, went into work, and took a look at the 6er. BIG smile across my face, seeing her parked inside, nice and dry and cozy. So sweet to see her as an actual car again, not a project waiting to happen, but a project that is nearly done. It was an emotional experience to see the engine in her for the first time, and a religious experience to hear it bark to life after so many years. There was NO WAY IN HELL, I was going to see that poor car sit outside for another rainy winter. She has a spot in my underground parking garage, soon as she's ready to come home.
