| Member | Modifying metric rims Hey guys Just a quick one. There is a set of Metric rims that are for sale in my local area that I am considering purchasing (they are very cheap and in good condition). They came off an E24 635 CSi and are the 415mm Dia. I have spoken with a wheel repair shop and they said that they can modify the bead where the tire seals to the rim so it can run normal 16" tires. I thought they would charge big $$$ to do such a modification but it sounds very reasonable. Has anyone had and experience with doing this or know of anyone that has?? The rims are cheap enough that if it doesnt work it is not a huge loss, but just thought i'd see if anyone has done this before and knows of any helpful hints or tricks. Cheers |

Blackice's pictures | WOW, I thought that would have been a bit of a no no. How much material are we talking about removing here ???? I guess it depends on the rim ? |

| Member | unsure or the exact amount. the metric rim is 415mm and 16 inches is 406.4mm, but it does depend on where the tyre bead is on the rim. so the difference there is 8.6mm and i would only need to take 1/2 of that off (being circular) so that is 4.3mm. given that a tire should be able to stretch 1-2mm i am thinking that 2-3mm would need to be taken off. all of this estimation could be rendered usless if the tire bead is wrong though... but in my head it makes some sense!!! |
