e28 M528i - help wanted!!

Hey Guys,

I am looking at a 1983 M528i and am wondering if anyone has any info on them. To my understanding these were an Australia only car because we didnt get the M535 until 1985 or 1986. That said they are a genuine M car and the one i am looking at is very tidy. Any info would be great.

I dont know anything abouit that model in particular but i have an 83 533i. Same as in the other post about things to check. So is it a m30b28? 2.8 liter m30? Rust probably isnt an issue for you, but drive it and it'll tell u alot.

Well I went and saw it today.... paid my deposit and I get it on monday!!! Very excited about it. Did some research before i went though. Australia didnt get the M535i until 1985 (or so)and the M5 came a bit later, and until then the 2.8 was the biggest engine that we had in the E28's. Ex-racing driver Frank Gardner took a bunch of 528i's and fitted them with an LSD, bilstein shocks, "superlight" BBS rims, Recaro front seats, front spoiler and some motorsport badges and stripes then they were sold through BMW dealerships as an M528i. It felt great to drive and it is in really good condition so i cant wait to get it... i'll post some pictures up soon if anyone is interested.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy the new car. It may be worthwhile checking if there's any South African sites where you could pick up useful info' because I think that the same situation existed there early eighties. The E28 528i was very popular and I swear there were some around badged as M cars until the 535i & M535i came along.

I have tried to look at what ones come in from south africa, but it doesnt seem that these came from there. the might have had something similar over there, but from my looking around it appears that these came in from BMW in germany... i called my local dealership and they did confirm that this was a genuine M car... so i am glad about that. I get it tonight and will start playing then!!
