Thumping on right rear under full load>? 533i

Hi my e28 has some little driveline issues, the ticking in the shifter and now some thumping on the back end under full load, the diff mount doesnt seem broken as well as obvious others dont seem it as well. Rear shock comes to mind but its not showing any other symptoms of a bad shock, bouncing etc.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanx

Nathan

Tough to diagnose without hearing the noise - but "shifter ticking" and "thumping under load" could both be symptomatic of driveshaft couplers and bearings needing some attention. You can check the guibo (rubber coupler at the transmission flange) visually. Checking the center bearing requires removal of the exhaust on most cars.

Good luck.

Sage advice from Mr.Woods.
Drive-shaft centre bearing support bolts may be gone or the bearing needs replacement.May as well change out the guibo as well, they are fairly cheap,it's right there, and you don't want go back and do it all again later.

i am going through what you are experiencing right now. something is not right with my shortened drive shaft(6 speed install) my guibo does not look like it is self destructing. i'll have to remove the exhaust piece in the centre to fully check the driveshaft.

lucky that i have a pit at work to get right under it.

Rear sub-frame mounts/diff mount are the normal causes of thumps in the rear.
You might not notice if the diff mount is broken. The diff mount could also have torn free frome the car.

New diff mount is under $50 at arizona autohaus.

Is your short shift kit rubbing on the drive shaft?

Thanx all, well the ticking is most certainly the selector or some part of the ssk rubbing on the guibo or driveshaft. i made an appt at nixons to change both subframe mounts. Im not too sure what can be done about the ticking on the shifter. i had it installed at bmc motorworks and not sure if it could be made not to rub?. the driveshaft and center bearing, and u joints have less than 4 k on them so i hope its not either of them, i have 10k worth of receipt for this car, full history.

Thanx everyone

Nathan

i dropped the heat shield over my catalytic converter last night. it revealed that the centre support bearing sb is totally blown out on my car.

does anyone know a shop closer to north van that can replace and re-balance my shaft? or is the csb something that i can replace myself.

i beleive that i did not pre tension the csb when installing it.

Does your E30 have a balancer on the output shaft? Most SSKs come with instructions on how to put a bend in the selector shaft to clear the balancer on the E30.

You can replace it yourself but it's a bit of work. I did it this winter on my M5. I needed a helper to get the exhaust back on and I had to cut the bolts off of the exhaust but besides that no problem... My CB was totally gone and the guibo (not original) was cracking. Turned out this was due to a seized u-joint and a rebuilt shaft was needed.

Changing the bearing requires complete removal of the exhaust and driveshaft. You then split the driveshaft halves (usually a single large 18mm nut holds them together), tap off old bearing and install the new one and put everything back together. A rebuilt shaft will come with a new bearing. You could possibly leave the rear CV joint bolted up to save a bit of work... The bearing is only $50 or so. I would also replace the guibo if it is getting old. Good time to replace any worn parts on your shifter linkage too...

No rebalancing normally required as long as you mark the driveshalf halves and carefully put them back together the way they came apart.

Cheers.

Im not sure if it has the balancer you mean rkett, its on an e28, and yes i did get the papers that i remember it showing how to bend the selector rod if necessary. Maybe i should have given it to the mechanic(sad face here). Its wierd though i drove a couple hundred k after it was installed and it started doing it all of a sudden, pretty much when the childlike thumping started. I wish i was that easy colin. Im kinda hoping that when i get the subframe mounts done itll magically disappear ( the ticking on the shifter that is). Check this out its a bit long but awe inspiring.

thanx all

Nathan
