its not fair!

beamer brothers...

im one of those 'lurkers' who never say anything or put up pics of my ride... but then...

i was watchin champions league yesterday and across the street a house is being torn down. i decide to go out to move my car to allow the huge dumpers more room. when i get to my car, i motion to the dump driver which way he'de like me to move it.

in the time it took me to get my keys and put on my shoes...

i want to save the car.
is icbc gonna write it off or give me pay-out?
im guessing theyre gonna low-ball me with something like $2000.
advise, suggestions?

-pretend nothing happened, buy another 325e
-do the impossible and find a 325es
-cave in and simply buy a 325is
-ignore the noise, the lack of s/r, the lack of back windows and save gas$ with a 318is
-listen to mom, move on and let it go

That sucks man, I feel for you.... I would start with ICBC and see what they have to say. But my guess is that that little bimmer is done. You could always buy the car back from ICBC and part it out.... But I would think you are better off to move on and look for your next ride.

A 325is if you can find one for the right price, that would rock. Or 318is, they are a great buy for the buck, and they are great fun to drive.

Either way, Let us know how to goes.

ok guys. i just got the phone call from icbc. they did an inspection 3 weeks ago and their offer is... $1400CDN. should i be grateful/satisfied/ticked-off/smoking mad? if this accident had not happened... i would have asked for $2500 IF i was going to sell.

here are the vitals for your consideration
  • 1986 325e -purchased 2006 at 386,000(?)
  • 397,500kms (re-built by the previous guy at 250,000, but i dont have receipts)
  • pw, pl, ps, pm, psr, cc
  • new air flow meter
  • new internal fuel pump
  • new cap & rotors
  • battery (2007), lines & hoses (2006), tyres (2006)
  • spot rust around few edges of sunroof
  • major tune-up at 393,486 (2008-Dec) $680
  • needs new undercoating around rr wheel-well
usual stuff:
dashboard on crack, bird trapped inside the fan, radioactive a/c, drivers seat ripped (rest is mint), raincloud stuck in the trunk, incomplete tool kit, missing flashlight, surface rust at joints (suspension), inoperative key light...

its my move. any idea what it should be?

I would say that is a reasonable offer, you are not going to get much more than that if you were to sell it before the accident. I would take it. Unfortunately ICBC doesn't really consider any recent work/new parts to the value (maybe very very little) as it doesn't increase the value to the scrap yards that bid on the damaged carcass.

do your homework. Come to the table with 2-4 classified ads for cars of your year and model (try to find with same options, but it's not always necessary). Try to meet somewhere in the middle of the highest and lowest ads. This is paperwork that they (adjusters) can put in the file, and not prices that you feel the car is worth.

Personally I wouldn't buy it back and part it out, as the e30 market has suffered greatly in the past year or so and people are having to almost give away 325e motors.

Look for something new to you, clean and use today's market to your advantage. Try to save up a little cash and go for a car that meets almost all if not all of your wants (your needs should always be covered first).

Good luck! [and sorry 'bout the crappy news]

update from icbc

hi guys... anybody still following (or remember) this post? heres an update on my situation. im still listening for advise if you have any. thnx...

i submitted lots of ads from usedvancouver, craigslist... and icbc bumped up their offer by $200 bucks! its now at $1600.

i was driving along the highway two weeks ago and all of a sudden it felt like a flat (on the impacted wheel). when i pulled into the next petrol station, the tyre looked like it was growing a tumour. when i returned with the spare, the tumour was gone and i drove it home like i the car was on ice skates. this expensive cab ride to fetch my spare i didnt need cost $80 and icbc said they would not cover it b/c if this was related to the original accident, something would have come up already. my positions is that since the accident, ive only driven the car perhaps 200kms.

my plan now is to counter offer icbc and insist on re-imbursement for that cab ride, retention of the speakers and the stereo, plus another $200 so that the final payout is as close to $2000 as possible.

im asking that much b/c inaddition to mine being one of the rare eta's... 'ive also been suffering from the inconvenience of driving a car i dont have confidence in.' i figure the only weakness is that my car has high mileage but again... that high mileage (400k) is with a rebuilt engine at 250k and the body plus frame is in very good condition.

the adjuster told me if i could go get my cars worth in writing from a dealer, they would definitely increase their offer to be more reflective.

if i do that... will the dealer
a) laugh at me
b) charge me more than its worth to do this?

advise, comments?
~thnx guys...

for tonight... is it the usual go canada go? or is it go germany?
