318 I 1994 timing issue

Wondering if anyone knows what the voltage readings should be at the crank sensor and cam sensor. I measure 5 volts at the crank sensor but have erratic voltage readings at the cam and only when being cranked over. I am wondering if this may be my probelm with this car.

thanks

Brian

You should be measuring ohms, measure the crank using pin 1 and 2, should be approximately 1300 +/- 10%

I have done that as far as the sensor is concerned. what I am asking is what voltage should be going to the sensor from the computer

I have measured the sensors. They are fine. What I am asking is the voltage going to the sensors from the computer.

Blackice's pictures

I think you would need to look at the signal, Which would require a oscilloscope.

So, I don't think measuring voltage will help you.

Does it run ?
Start ?

IIRC 5vdc power in pin 1, reading in pin 2 and 3 should range 0-5v.

a bad CPS should trigger a CEL

Well broke down and brought it to a reputable mechanic who was recommended as honest. Well he was and what he found is as I suspected the timing was off. I was not sure why but it had to do with the crank shaft wheel which is why I had initially swaped the sensor for it. BMW have this crank shaft wheel attached to the crank shaft via rubber for vibration dampening. Would you not know it the rubber shifted (separated from the metal) slightly causing the timing to be off so that it would not run. Just like BMW to be different from anyone else. Just like the drive shaft rubber coupling that disintegrated on me last summer. I guess they are big on rubber to metal coupling. Well this mechanic took a couple of minutes to line up the marks for this wheel and the timing chain to realize it had shifted some how. To bad my shop manual did not mention that one.
