How do I change a thermistate in my 1989 bmw 325i

I have no idea how to change my thermostat in my old 1989 325i. Also whats the cost approximately and is it difficult to do it at home. And just a side note does the car have to have a working battery for the hood to open because if it doesnt i think my hood is stuck or jammed.
Thanks for the help

you should download or buy a "bentley" manual. if your gonna do things on your e30 this will be invaluable. no, the hood latch isnt electrical in any way, should open.

give the hood a push down while someone pulls the hood release.
