i opened up the timing case and replaced the timing chain guide. That part was originally made out of stamp steel which was later revised to composite material.

i also noticed that the crank sprocket for the chain was worned out but i didnt' want to buy all the parts incase my there are other issues with the engine. lucky it was running well afterwards, and i got 28.6mpg last tank of gas.

I jus bought crank sprocket, guide rails, chain, water pump etc, planning to work on it in the next few days.

To check if u have LSD, look for a metal tag that's one of the bolts on your differential case. If it reads S4.10, it's an LSD. If it reads jus 4.10, it's open diff. If it's smudged up with rust, u can jack up both your rear wheel, lock the wheels in gear, release hand brake, and try rotating one side of the wheel and see if it spins freely. If the other wheel is spinning the other direction, it's open diff.

i think only 10% of 318is has the LSD option. You shall be joyfull if it has the option becuz it's so damn rare.

so are u gonna do the head gasket yourself?

I didn't realize the LSD was so rare, I thought all the IS models had the LSD.

I was told by the PO that it needs a Head Gasket..... But I don't think it needs a head gasket, There is no water in the oil, it seems to run smooth. I pulled the plugs today and they are covered in carbon deposits, flat black ! I think the car is running very rich, Or burning oil like crazy ! The hard call is that all the plugs are the same. Dry, Black and very fouled. Maybe the valves ? Rings ?

I will do a compression check on it tomorrow... See if that can give me any clues.

Bet ya $10 your lower intake is coated with thick black sludge. Might be worth the gaskets to pull the throttle body, afm, upper and lower intakes, clean the hell out of them, new plugs, check all your hoses underneath the intake, its a spagetti nest in there. All this depending on the compresion test of course

Nice. Tear down the intake manifold, replace all the hoses, clean up, new plugs etc.

Just want to learn something from this… so would an intake leak means the engine is sucking in unfiltered, dirty air for combustion and therefore lead to dirty plugs?

intake leak brings unmetered air into the engine causing it to run noticably lean at idle, and so can run rough / lumpy. Effects of dirty air shouldn't be noticable.

Last night I found a split vacuum hose on the Fuel Pressure regulator.

It looks like the only hose that has not been replaced.

If the M 42 requires a good Vacuum to run things like a FPR, why did they do such a horrible job with all these hoses ? WHY ? Why ?

$10 to NvanM42lover, the intake is thick !

Ya, no kidding, the effects of cheap gas and clogged air filter, old plugs etc. Rerouted pvc air as well Im sure. My buddies 318 runs considerably better now that all spagetti hoses and intake upper and lower has been cleaned. Are you sure ALL hoses under the intake are new? Even the tri junction ones that share water and vaccuum?

Yeah, they are all new under there.

I think the guy working on this car had the right idea, he replaced all of the Vac lines, he just over looked this one, it appeared to be in good shape..... It wasn't until I pulled the hose off that it showed a split at the end of it.

With all this much shit in the intake, I can't imagine how much is on the valves.

I have used it in the gas tank, seems to help, but Euegene did it in his intake and said it made a big difference in fuel efficiency.
